1. Don't paint your kitchen cabinets you will have to live with them if you screw them up because you don't have the money to replace them!
"Resistance is futile." I begin to paint the cabinets.
2. You will have to degloss and sand and prime your cabinets if you want them to turn out right. You think "Maybe if I just buy paint with primer already in it, I can get away without doing that step." You paint, it looks bad.....really bad.
"Resistance is futile." You degloss and sand the cabinets....along with the fresh paint you just put on them. You put a coat of primer/stain blocker on them.
3. Take your time and do it right. Paint needs time to cure. You think, "They look dry....I'll just slap another coat on them and get done sooner."
"Resistance is futile." You now have to re-sand and paint where the paint globbed on your cabinet doors....or stuck to whatever surface you were painting on and pulled off the still not cured paint. It takes you more time.
4. You should wait to paint until your husband is done with all of his sawing, sanding and dry walling, because that causes a LOT of dust and it will stick to fresh paint.
You think," I will just be careful and quickly do this when he isn't sawing or sanding." You paint. You come back to look at your dry cabinet and realize that there is a big chunk of dust in almost every cabinet.
"Resistance is futile." You re-sand again. You end up redoing all of the cabinet doors after your husband is done with the messy dry wall repair and making of wooden countertop and general tearing out of closets. He did an awesome job by the way! Thanks Honey!
5. Don't paint in your pajamas/ good clothes because you will get paint on them. You think,"Oh I will just touch up this little part and be very careful."
Resistance is futile. You now have 14 sets of paint clothes and ugly paint covered pj's.
6. You only have two doors left to do on this round of painting. You notice that there is hardly any paint left in the pan. You think, you might as well go and pour a little more paint in the pan. You think,"nah...I will just scrounge in the corners for the dregs of the paint and try to stretch it out. I hate to have to run back down for the paint or cover the fresh paint for later." You painstakingly dab and scrounge for many minutes trying to get enough paint.
"Resistance is futile." You go and pour some more paint for the one door that you now have left.
7. You finally have some cabinet doors installed. You notice once they are up that there is a little tiny glob on one of the doors in a not so obvious place. You think to yourself "leave well enough alone. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT take the sand paper to sand off that tiny little speck that no one except for you will ever notice Don't do it! I'm serious!" .....
What do you think will happen?
Another few observations....
Paint sticks to everything like glue.....except for what you are trying to paint.
People in DIY forums on the internet can be mean. "Duh...you did it wrong and now you must spend tons of money to redo your ugly cabinets!"
Well....I may have ugly cabinets, but you have an ugly attitude! This didn't really happen to me....but I see answers to other people's questions that kind of go that way :). And I don't think my cabinets are going to be ugly....I hope! (fingers crossed)
From a distance, with your eyes slightly crossed and out of focus, even your old cabinets looked okay.
What seems like a really great idea that you saw on pinterest that must be done at the beginning of the project, loses its importance by the end of it when you just want to be done and get your house back in order.
Stay tuned.....the reveal is getting closer.....I think, I hope, maybe! When you see it, you will get the DIY nano bug. You too will be assimilated! Resistance is futile!
